How important is it for a pastor to acutally visit the home of church members...

While it was a common practice, years ago, for pastor’s to visit the saints home, it is not done so much any more. Today, both parents work outside the home and they do not often feel that they have the time, or a clean enough house, for the pastor to visit. For better or for worse, we live in a much more demanding and busy time.
However, it totally depends on individual circumstances. If you pastor in a rural area, for example, where people expect the pastor to visit, you may need to do so. This is a judgment call. If you are called to go to someone’s home to pray for a person or need, by all means go!
Some pastor’s prefer to never even begin the practice of visiting the saint’s home. How often do you visit? Do you visit every family in the church? Will other people get jealous if they feel you do not visit them enough? Some saints like to spend time with the pastor because it makes them feel “special” but may be a means of control or influence the pastor. Occasionally you may be invited to eat dinner with a family and you can do so without making it a habit.
A pastor should assure the people that they should feel free to call him if they need him to visit their home for some reason. It is always best to call and set up a time to visit and not just drop in.
