How are board members chosen from within the local church?
First you need to check your bylaws and see what is mandated. This type of thing should be in the minutes of the church.
Some pastor’s appoint specific board members and have them ratified at the annual business meeting. This is totally dependant on the pastor’s discretion.
Other pastor’s bring a pool of names to the church for consideration and a vote is taken from those recommended. The pastor is probably the only one qualified to make these recommendations since he knows the most about them.
In some cases the same board may serve for many years without many changes being made from year to year. This may be true in a small church where there are not a lot of men to draw from.
Other pastors rotate board members depending on a term limit basis. The terms could be a 2, 4, 6, or 8 years…basically whatever has been predetermined. For example, if it is a four year appointment, the oldest serving board member would be rotated off after four years. This arrangement prevents one board member from serving too long, provides a non-threatening way to change a board member and gives more men opportunity to serve the church.
