Are there any subjects that should not be dealt with from the pulpit? If so, is there another forum in which they should be dealt with or left alone altogether?

It is true that some subjects are dealt with more openly than was true a few years ago. Even children know more about these sensitive matters in today’s culture. An example of this is drugs; homosexuality etc. and these things need to be dealt with in the Church (and home).
However I do not think the pulpit is the place to be crude, vulgar, or insensitive to the people who come to hear us preach. We do not have to be belligerent or offensive when preaching against sin.
I use the following formula to determine what I speak about from the pulpit. Can you speak about the subject with dignity? Do your comments show respect to those listening? Is it embarrassing to those who hear you? You may get away with saying some things from the pulpit but if the people are embarrassed or feel that that they have been violated, then the impact of the message has been lost anyway.
A church can deal with these things through educational methods in bible training classes or other age appropriate settings. Small group ministry with the proper literature is very effective.
We must also be careful about labels we put on people publicly. A church and pastor were recently sued (and eventually found guilty) because the pastor said that a lady connected with the church was a fornicator. In today’s world we learn how to preach against sin in language that is plan and simple but not offensive or abusive.
